Raipur, 9 February 2012 – Orissa ranks first in Leprosy Surgery to correct deformity while Chhattisgarh gets second position by conduction 190 free leprosy operation in India.
Leprosy Division, Government of India Ministry of Health has released statistics recently announcing top 5 states offering free leprosy deformaty correction surgery.
The state ranks are –
- Orissa – First with 230 operations
- Chhattisgarh – Second
- Gujarat - Third
- West Bengal is the fourth and
- Karnataka is ranked fifth.
In Chhattisgarh, Government hospitals conducted operation for deformed limbs on 190 leprosy patients in year 2010-11. In addition, 83 patients were operated through NGOs.
Health Minister Amar Agrawal has informed that free leprosy treatment offered to 7000 patients in 2010-11.
During treatment process 304 leprosy patients were identified who required construction surgery. Of these, 190 patients got free of surgery and 36 patients were given artificial equipment.
Health Secretary Vikas Sheel told detail data about Chhattisgarh leprosy scenario. From 2003 to 2011 approximately 67000 (Sixty Seven Thousands) leprosy patients have been provided with free treatment.
Old leprosy patient who has a physical deformity of the limbs, their operation is done free of cost by Chhattisgarh state.
